The Causes of Pet Allergies

Truth be told, pet allergies can be caused by a multitude of allergens that can be found either inside or outside the home. Outside the home, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies that can be triggered by the changing seasons. Various pollen and spores released into the air can cause pets to suffer severe allergies. Within the home, pets can become allergic to several household allergens. Sometimes a simple laundry detergent or soap is enough to trigger an allergic reaction, while other pets can be allergic to dust or smoke found within the home. Some pets suffer from food allergies that can be found in either the pet’s food or treats.

Pet Allergy Symptoms

Just as allergy sources differ, so do the symptoms. For some pets, allergies will appear as skin irritations. Your pet may bite, scratch, or chew at various parts of its body, mostly the legs and feet. You may notice that the skin is red or raw, or might be missing patches of fur. If you ever notice that the skin is raw or bleeding, you should take your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Open wounds are an ideal site for dangerous bacteria to enter the body. Other symptoms of seasonal allergies or environmental allergies within the home may include sneezing, wheezing, coughing, a runny nose or watery eyes. Usually, food allergies manifest as intestinal distress and cause your pet to suffer from diarrhea or vomiting.
